The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) matched students with businesses in the Northern Virginia area for the 2009 NVTC Groundhog Job Shadow Day. Every year, more and more students are looking to participate in the Shadow Day event. In its first year, only 20 students were involved. This year over 100 students and 34 businesses participated in the event.
On Friday, March 6, 2009, the Job Shadow Day event brought two FCPS students to experience the PC Recycler workplace. They learned about the world of electronics recycling and data destruction. The two of them told us that they did not even know that a company like us existed. But after going through our business process and seeing our 4,000lb shredder do its work, now they realize that there are greener solutions than just trashing old items. They received on-site exposure to a business environment as well as great first-hand experience from an entrepreneur, CEO Jeremy Farber.
During their shadow time, we asked the two students what they wanted to learn about business. We tried to relate the skills they learned in school to what they could expect in the workplace. They shared their own stories about wanting to start their own businesses. The employees at PC Recycler enjoyed having the students around to share their work environment. We want to thank the two students who shadowed PCR, NVTC, and FCPS for a successful Job Shadow Day!

The Entrepreneur Center @NVTC was established in 2004 as a resource center for emerging technology companies and individual entrepreneurs. The goals of the center are to provide a clearinghouse of resources and services for the entrepreneur at every stage of his or her lifecycle—from fostering entrepreneurship in students, to mentoring the first-time entrepreneur, advising the returning entrepreneur and engaging the seasoned entrepreneur in venture philanthropy.
