PC Recycler Inc. participates in
National Hunger Awareness Day
On National Hunger Awareness Day, June
5, 2007, the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) sponsored food
drives all over Arlington, VA. In addition to the food drives, AFAC
also had their 4th Annual Restaurant Night.
AFAC’s mission is to feed the hungry
and prevent homelessness by helping Arlington residents with their
health and nutritional needs. They provide groceries to families and
individuals referred to them by the Arlington County Department of
Human Services, other social agencies, and churches in the area.
This system ensures that their needs are legitimate and are being
addressed appropriately. AFAC obtains surplus food at a minimal cost
from the Capital Area Community Food Bank and at no cost from local
bakeries, supermarkets, farmers markets, food drives, and private
donors.
AFAC distributed over one million
pounds of food to needy Arlington residents this past year. In their
Fiscal Year 2006 (July 1, 2005– June 30, 2006) AFAC served 28,888
families and volunteers donated over 17,000 hours of time.
PC Recycler Inc. was an AFAC Corporate
Supporter on National Hunger Awareness Day 2007. About ten thousand
pounds of food, almost doubling last year’s total, was donated that
day from the numerous food drives. Participating restaurants
included: two Aladdin’s locations, Cassatt’s, Chevy’s at Ballston,
Metro 29 Diner, Pie-Tanza, Pines of Florence, Red Hot & Blue BBQ
Grill, Sangam, Santa Fe Café, Sushi-Zen, Toscana Grill, and
Whitlow’s on Wilson. These numbers are examples of how generous the
community is for its fellow residents.
PC Recycler’s truck and services were
donated to AFAC for the day in order to collect all of the groceries
from the food drives. The truck made stops to almost one dozen
schools to make sure that every pound of food was put to good use
for the needy Arlington families. “The truck donation saved AFAC
thousands of dollars. With PC Recycler’s help, we were able to
collect about 4,000 pounds of food. The truck, along with the time
that PC Recycler donated was extremely helpful – we could not thank
our supporters enough,” said Christine Lucas, Executive Director.
AFAC strives to provide groceries to
needy Arlington families who cannot afford to purchase the food that
they need. Donations contribute to the life and health of Arlington
families.
